Chapter 25
“So, where to now?” I asked as we left the shoe store next to Putting on the Ritz and walked toward the car. I was now the owner of not only a sleek pair of Concerto patent leathers for my wedding, but a pair of Boss dress shoes suitable for tonight’s dinner party and tomorrow night’s engagement party at Llewellyn Manor. I’d lucked out: the Boss shoes, which usually ran almost three hundred dollars, had been reduced.
I swung the bags from my right hand, while Hyde carried the garment bag containing my suit and shirts.
“I really do have to touch base with Armitage. Would you mind coming to the Trunk with me?”
“I wouldn’t mind going anywhere with you.” I wanted to wind my fingers in his, and would have in spite of the bandage on my left hand, but public displays of affection were severely frowned upon by Sir, and I wasn’t sure how Hyde would feel about them.
“You’re not too tired? Last night had to be an ordeal for you. It was for me,” he said softly, and I could hardly catch my breath. That was so sweet of him to say!
I couldn’t help smiling at him. “Well, it’s not something I’d care to repeat. But no, I’m fine.”
“Okay.” He stored the garment bag in the back of his Mercedes along with my shoes, and then opened the passenger door of the SUV, turned my face to him, and brushed his lips over mine. I stared into his eyes, and he smiled. “I hope you don’t mind.”
“N-no. I don’t mind at all.” I’d have thrown myself into his arms and peppered his face with kisses, but Sir’s words and the memory of Daniel’s reaction convinced me to keep my emotions in check. Once we were married, though….
“I’m glad. I….” His smile became rueful, and he shook his head. “Get in.”
I scrambled into the front seat and buckled up, then waited until he was behind the wheel and driving toward the Trunk before taking a breath, crossing my fingers, and asking, “Do I get to see your suite?”
“Certainly.” Before I could contemplate the possibility that maybe we could spend some time kissing—that last brush of his mouth over mine was too brief to count as a proper kiss, and I wanted to nibble and lick his full lower lip, preferably while we were on a bed, until I drove both of us out of our minds—he continued, “On Sunday, as I’d told you.”
“Spoilsport,” I muttered under my breath.
He grinned. “You’re pretty irresistible, you know.”
“You could’ve fooled me.”
He reached across and ruffled my hair. “Once I complete my business with Armitage, I’ll make sure we have some time alone.”
“You’re a tease.”
“But you love me anyway.”
“Well, of course!” But I said it in such a way that he’d know I was teasing. He probably didn’t realize I’d never have agreed to marry him—no matter what Sir said, no matter what Granddad said—if I hadn’t cared about him.
“Kipp.” He suddenly sounded very serious.
